Clear Lake Research is Pleased to Announce:

 ChessPadx

for the Appler Newtonx.

ChessPad is an application that turns the Newton into a digital chess book
and a portable chess set. ChessPad contains 28 chess games chosen carefully
from over 100 years of chess history to be the most exciting, instructive,
and the easiest to understand and appreciate. The collection of games
includes at least one game from each world champion since the world
championship was established in 1886. Each game is annotated in detail so
that beginning as well as advanced chess players can learn from them and
appreciate their brilliance. ChessPad also includes 100 chess problems
ranging in difficulty from problems a novice can solve to those that would
challenge an experienced tournament player.

ChessPad as a Digital Chess Book
It is simple to play over a game using ChessPad. Begin by tapping on the name
of the game. A short description of the game is then displayed. If you want
to see the game, tap the "View Selected Game/Problem" button and a chessboard
is displayed. To see a move press the "Move" button. The move is played out
on the board and an explanation of the move is given at the bottom of the
screen. You can move the pieces yourself to explore other possible moves.

Reading a chess book normally involves setting up a chessboard and playing
over games. When variations of possible move sequences given in the book are
too hard to visualize in your head, you have to play them out on the board.
To continue with the game you then have to reset the board to the game
position. This is very inconvenient. With ChessPad, you can play over
alternative variations by moving the pieces on the Newton. With a single tap,
the game position can be restored and the game continued.

It is fun to try to guess the next move of a master's game. ChessPad includes
move anticipation: If you make the same move that was played in the game, a
small circle appears briefly in the square the piece was moved to; the game
then proceeds as if you had tapped the "Move" button. If your move is not the
one played, you can tap the "Back" button and try again or push the "Move"
button and see the move played in the game.

Move anticipation also works extremely well with the chess problems. You make
the move you think is the solution to the problem. If it is the correct move,
the circle appears briefly.

ChessPad as a Portable Chess Set
When used as a portable chess set, ChessPad allows you to play another
person. Naturally you can save games and take back moves. ChessPad also
contains a built-in chess clock so you can play speed chess on your Newton.
Best of all, the pieces are guaranteed not to fall off the board!

Price and ordering information
The suggested retail price for ChessPad is $69.95.
